The bluesign® system is the solution for a sustainable textile production. It eliminates harmful substances right from the beginning of the manufacturing process and sets and controls standards for an environmentally friendly and safe production. This not only ensures that the final textile product meets very stringent consumer safety requirements worldwide but also provides confidence to the consumer to acquire a sustainable product. The bluesign® system as a holistic approach ensures by means of “Input Stream Management” and corresponding measures to minimize the risks on environment and people with respect to functionality, quality and design. A sophisticated “Chemicals Management” allows clean production, minimizes emissions and assures safe consumer products. Guidance of companies towards responsible use of resources provides additional benefit and possible cost saving potential. Sub-solutions support the integration of the bluesign® system and could be partly also used as stand-alone answer to a given requirement for a first step of implementation of the bluesign® system. The bluesign® system brings together the entire textile manufacturing chain to jointly reduce the ecological footprint of a responsibly acting textile industry. Instead of focusing on finished product testing, the bluesign® system analyzes all input streams – from raw materials to chemical component, to resources – with a sophisticated “Input Stream Management” process. Prior to production, components are assessed based on their ecotoxicological impact. Potentially harmful substances can hence be eliminated before production even begins. A key aspect of the bluesign® system is never to compromise on product functionality, quality or design. Consequently, it is in some instances, for the reason of performance requirements, inevitable to use specific intelligent chemistry. In those cases it is fundamental to properly manage the manufacturing process using “Best Available Technology” (BAT). The bluesign® system is designed to provide solutions to pressing EHS issues along the entire textile manufacturing chain. Instead of restricting the use of certain substances, it provides the manufacturer with components, processes and know-how, that can be used and enable the manufacturer to produce quality products with the highest consumer and environmental safety.
